I’d say you’re on the right track here. From my experience, the SSL2+ combo inputs can be a bit confusing since the XLR side is indeed designed for mic-level signals, which explains the weak, noisy output you’re getting. Your phono preamp is sending a line-level signal, so using RCA to TRS or TS cables into the line inputs is the correct approach. Unfortunately, there’s no real way to “fix” the original RCA/XLR cables for proper gain staging in this setup. Switching cables should solve the issue.
